Testing R3

This is the result of a very critical test by our Country Fire Service crew captains during/after our recent spate of nasty bushfires, and the trial unit came through with flying colours compared to ANYTHING else had. Blackspot, smoke ceiling, wet, shock, all else a firey can give it, it even endured heat that disfigured a cover of a standard flip phone. You said test ‘em, we did. But I’d rather not have those conditions just to test!

Aspera R3 Review

I am reasonably impressed with the R3. During the last several weeks I haven't killed it, I have reasonably tried.

I am a WISP, 'accidentally' dropped it while servicing one of my transmitters, 20m up, didn't miss a beat. Fell out of my pocket while helping change a truck tyre, got stepped on whilst lifting a 65kg spare wheel, never knew it had happened. As a backup groundsman for our Oval/Parks/Swimming Pool, all irrigation water comes from a 2mil gal stormwater dam, I slipped down the causeway servicing the pump, (happens a few times), wet as a shag, probably underwater for some 2-3 mins till I got myself out but left in wet pocket until changing some 2 hrs later, still working. Range very good compared to heaps others we've tried here, all makes/sorts. Battery life incredible, 4 days with my heavy usage, still 29%. That was my biggest gripe with the Seals, couldn't get a full day. Size, weight, 'feel', great compared to other tough phones. The 2 sim capability great for fringe like us, can have a telstra and others sim, use whatever the best signal is. Not auto though, but all the ruggeds have this feature.

So @ $225 for the R3, reasonable value. I elected to test the R3 first. Now I am liking the R3, I may not get to the R5. BUT that has been around, but the user not as bold as I, and being female, in a case, size not so crucial. WiFi range excellent as well. I can get the cricket scores and weather info more than ½km from one of my transmitters, better than a notebook. Screen visibility in bright sunshine not great, but all are same. Screen touch sensitivity taking a bit to get used to, but will. There is 2000 tonnes odd of grain to be shifted in the near future, will see how if fares going through an elevator, have at least one client do that every harvest.
